If I Stay by Gayle Forman

When seventeen-year-old Mia wakes to an unusual snow day off from school, she still has a promising life: a cool family she gets along with, a best friend who is very much like her but into photography, probable acceptance into Julliard to study cello, and a punk-rocker boyfriend who truly loves her. As the family drives to visit friends, they are hit by an oncoming truck. Both parents die at the scene and Mia's little brother dies at the hospital. She finds herself in a surreal place of watching herself being taken to the hospital, medivacked to a different hospital, taken into surgery and then lying in ICU. She discovers she cannot walk through walls or transport herself anywhere. She must walk around the hospital like everyone else, they just cannot see her, hear her, or feel her. She sees and hears her grandparents and extended family, her best friend and her mother, her boyfriend and accompanying musicians, as well as the medical staff. All the while she goes back and forth between the present she doesn't quite know what to do with and the rich memories of her life. Finally, she realizes she must make a choice...she has lost so much. But can she stay.
